News and Updates
Sept social and LFL Build

We hope you are able to join us for this month's social. We will be building more Little Free Libraries at York Enterprises. Come prepared for lots of fun and great conversation while we paint and glue our little libraries together.

Food will be catered for this event. A donation of $10 or a shareable beverage is suggested. Please click here to sign up for this event. Guests are welcome!

LFLs installed and dedicated
Recently two of our Little Free Libraries were installed.  The LFL at Hope Sparks was installed on August 22nd and was dedicated to PCPC member Christopher Lee, and another LFL was installed at McCarver Elementary.
The same evening as the dedication of the LFL at HopeSparks, members also added "Book donated by the Rotary Passport Club of Pierce County" labels to hundreds of books that will be available in our LFLs around Pierce County.  Nice job!!

Great meeting at Johnny's Dock 9/12/18
President Elect TONY CAMORODA was our greeter as we all met at Johnny's Dock.  They were newly remodeled, had a new menu, and the service went very smoothly.
President Jinnie called the meeting to order at 6:03 as dinner orders were taken.  JENNIFER WOLBRECHT ably led the Four-Way Test.  Rotary anniversaries were announced:  Haley 1 year, Nita 22 years, and Neel 23 years.
Fine Time:
  • Gerald: likes Eric Boles’ quote: “If you always focus on what you’re comfortable doing, you’ll never be great.”
  • Megan celebrated today by stepping in cat vomit!
  • Nita: 50th wedding anniversary in Galapagos Islands
  • Kaaren: son needs work while Tumwater schools on strike
  • Beverly: Going to Spokane for meetings with Kaaren
  • Terri: great July vacation, then appendectomy followed by 2nd surgery in August!
  • Helen: new grandbaby, Brelynn Renette.
  • Jennifer D: Hunter and wife evacuating out of So. Carolina to Atlanta
  • Neel: house resold; took garden tour of Colorado steppes.
  • Jennifer W: “I’ve had a long day”…and about 5 other people in the room nodded vigorously!  Had a big party to celebrate her 40th and their 10th anniversary.
  • President Jinnie: invited us all to Wine and Bingo on 11/3 for B&G Clubs.
Our wonderful August Rotarian of the Month, Sue Dahlin, awarded the September Rotarian of the Month recognition to HALEY EVANS.  She added that it was a pleasure to recognize a relatively new Rotarian’s commitment and excellence!
Our Co-Chair of the Foundation Committee, Nita Sell, was happy and proud to award BEVERLY VINCENT with her second Paul Harris Fellowship.  Beverly donates, contributes, volunteers and gives money to the Foundation, proving she is a great Passport Rotarian.
Beverly and Nita then jumped ahead on the agenda to give our club goals for giving to The Rotary Foundation ($3500) and Polio Plus ($500) during President Jinnie’s year, 2018-2019.  Of course our primary goals is EREY – every Rotarian donates at least $25 every year.
Club Administration update:  Jinnie stood in for Karyn.  Reminder to fill in the form at each meeting if you attended another Rotary club, attended a committee meeting, and/or volunteered for a project.  Or use the to send it in.
Membership update: Jennifer D. reminded us to bring friends to our meetings and that we just received a new member application.
  • Dorothy Lewis just hates missing our meetings but is still dealing with her stenosis issues; let’s all send her emails, cards, or messages to say we’re missing her.Check out Boon Supply before you buy anything because part of your money comes back to our club!
Programs and Meeting Organization: update:  Haley and Sue
  • Social at York Enterprises on the 26th 5:30-7:00 where we will build more little libraries!  $10 to cover food.
  • Meeting with District Governor Craig on the 10th at the Lakewood Ram.  He’s is actually a great speaker so bring your friends and families.
  • December social moved up to 12/19 at Mad Cap Marketing, courtesy of Past President Stephanie.
  • Coat Drive in October; recipient organization to be announced.
NEEL PARIKH gave her talk about joining other Rotarians from our District who visited the grant project in Guatemala:  Business Development for Guatemalan Women.  How inspiring it is to learn that micro lending to women entrepreneurs works!
HOWARD SVIGALS, Assistant District Governor and District Foundation Chair gave an excellent report by starting out: “The Guatemala project is a perfect example of what The Rotary Foundation does!”  For the 10th year in a row, Charity Navigator has given us their highest rating.  The Gates Foundation will double our donations to Polio Plus over the next 3 years; we could reach $150,000,000.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm.
